Grapefruit Smoothie For Weight Loss: 3 Ways

Weight Loss Grapefruit Strawberry Smoothie being poured into a thick glass cup from a blender jug

I’ve made this smoothie three times, using three different types of grapefruit.

  1. Grapefruit Juice
  2. Canned Grapefruit
  3. Fresh Grapefruit

The recipe I shared today contains fresh grapefruit.

If fresh grapefruit isn’t available and you have canned or grapefruit juice, here are tips for making this berry smoothie with those alternatives:

  • For the grapefruit juice variation, do not use the coconut water listed in the recipe. Grapefruit juice in this case will serve the purpose of the smoothie base. However, you will need to use an additional 1/3 cup of frozen berries.
  • The canned grapefruit variation is similar to the fresh grapefruit type of this grapefruit smoothie recipe. The quantities of fresh and canned grapefruit is the same, however, you will need to drain the grapefruit segments from the can. If you do not do that, your smoothie will come out too ‘runny‘.

Whenever you make changes to smoothie recipes, always add small amounts of each ingredient you introduce or swap.

Taste along the way. This will allow you to achieve the perfect smoothie with your own added touch.

Other Optional Ingredient Swaps You Can Make To This Recipe

If the other ingredients listed in my recipe, are ingredients you perhaps dislike or simply don’t have available to you at home, here are some alternatives:

  • Swap the cucumber for an apple or pineapple. Use either 1/4 cup of diced pineapple or half of a large apple.
  • The strawberries can be swapped for other berries. Blueberries, raspberries, and even blackberries are all great substitutions.
  • Swap the coconut water for dairy-free of choice. Just make sure it’s unsweetened.
  • Swap the chia seeds for flaxseeds or oats.
