I have a dog called Alfie, and I decided to craft dog smoothie recipes so my dog can enjoy a delicious smoothie as much as I do on a regular basis!
Are Banana Smoothies Good For Dogs?
Banana smoothies are the best type of smoothie your dog can eat. They are nutritious, and bananas are perfectly fine for dogs.
Here’s a full list of all the benefits of banana smoothies for dogs:
- The potassium in bananas can be extremely beneficial for the dog’s heart and helps prevent any cardiovascular illnesses. Bananas are also low in sodium and cholesterol
- Bananas can support the dog’s immune system and energy production, thanks to vitamins B6, C, and minerals such as potassium and magnesium.
- Thanks to the fiber found in bananas, it can support the healthy digestion of your dog.
- Banana smoothies are a low-calorie treat, making them very useful for managing your dog’s weight.
- The antioxidant properties in bananas can help reduce inflammation and also combat free radicals and improve your dog’s overall health.
However, not every banana smoothie is good for your dog. It all comes down to what ingredients are used in the making of banana smoothies.
To ensure that the banana smoothie is dog friendly, make them at home, ensure that you use minimal ingredients, and keep them as plain as possible.
For example, a banana with milk blended is a great and healthy smoothie for your dog.
What Type Of Smoothies Can Dogs Have?
Banana smoothies aren’t the only type of smoothie dogs can have.
The first thing you need to identify is what fruit and vegetables dogs can eat, then create smoothies around these ingredients.
But, I have done the research on what ingredients dogs can eat, so, here’s a list of all the types of smoothies dogs can have:
- Banana Smoothies
- Berry Smoothies
- Apple Smoothies
- Cabbage Smoothies
- Carrot Smoothies
- Spinach Smoothies
- Sweet Potato Smoothies
- Watermelon Smoothies
Do note that these types of smoothies are only suitable if they only contain dog-friendly ingredients.
For example, you cannot give your dog a spinach smoothie with protein powder, but you can give your dog a smoothie that contains spinach, water, and berries for example.
Optional Ingredients You Can Substitute
If your dog dislikes some of the ingredients or you simply don’t have them, here are some alternatives:
- Replace the peanut butter with sunflower seed butter.
- Instead of dairy milk, you can use coconut milk instead
- If you want to add more ingredients, you can add a bit of yogurt and some berries, but use minimal ingredients.
Ideal Serving Size
The amount you should give to your dog very much depends on what type of dog you have and their size.
However, a general rule of thumb is to give them 1/2 cup a day. This smoothie recipe provided above makes 1 1/2 servings.
You can always double the recipe and make a bigger batch.
If your dog has never had a smoothie before, you may want to start with 1/3 – 1/4 cup, so the dog has a chance to be introduced to it slowly.
Dog Smoothie Storage Tips
Since dogs can only have a small amount of this dog smoothie, you will need to store it right.
Here is how:
- Once the smoothie is blended, pour the leftovers into an air-tight container or a bottle.
- Tightly close the lids of the containers/bottles.
- Place the bottles/containers in the fridge immediately.
- Ensure that the dogs consume all the smoothies within 2 days, if not, you will need to throw away anything after 2 days.
