How many calories in a shot of espresso you may wonder, it’s a big misconception that black coffee doesn’t have calories, but it does!
Saying that the calories are so low, that really, they don’t need counting or adding to your daily calories. However, if you are someone who has several coffees a day – these calories will add up. Especially if you flavor your coffee with either sugar, milk or cream, or all of the above.
But, we are here to break all that down for you, so let’s get to it:
How Many Calories In a Shot Of Espresso
Typically, a serving (1 fl oz/30g) would be between 2-3 calories per shot of espresso.
However, here is where it gets interesting. How many calories is in a shot of espresso will also depend on the type of coffee used – Typically, each coffee shop would use a certain type of coffee. Some coffees even have added stuff to them, like notes of berry, or other stuff in them.
But ultimately, black coffee is very low on calories, so even if the coffee you are buying from your coffee shop has some fancy coffee beans with additives to it, the number of calories would still range between 2-3 per espresso shot.
Calories In a Double Shot Of Espresso
It’s simple maths here, if a shot of espresso contains 2-3 calories, then a double one would contain 4-6.
However, this is purely 2 shots of plain espresso, we are not talking 2 shots of espresso within a latte for example, as the milk in the drink would increase the calories. 4-6 calories are for 2 plain shots of espresso on their own.
If The Espresso Is So Low On Calories, Why Are Coffee Drinks Higher In Calories?
Now, let’s break this down quickly. Just because a shot of espresso barely contains any calories, doesn’t mean that a latte or a cappuccino contains the same. Why?
Because of added ingredients to your daily cup of latte at your local coffee shop. We are talking milk, sugar, syrups, etc. All these ingredients added have calories.
Typically, a small cappuccino would come to about 150 calories per serving. Nowhere near the 2-4 calories, a shot of espresso on its own has, right?
When it comes to coffee, you should always include that in your daily calorie intake, especially if you drink 2+ cups of coffee a day. However, that would typically apply if you add milk, sugar, or both to your coffee. Black coffee/espresso is typically very low in calories to include in your daily calorie intake.

But let’s say you add 1/2 teaspoon of sugar, then the calories would be anywhere between 10-15 calories per shot of espresso with sugar.
How Many Calories In a Cup Of Coffee
There is no right answer to this question. Why? Because it really depends on what you ADD to this cup of coffee. Is it a latte straight from Starbucks? Is it a cappuccino with a shot of caramel? The calories will very much depend on what you add.
However, let’s give you an example, let’s say you make your own cup of coffee with 1 shot of espresso and 200ml of semi-skimmed milk, which would bring the total amount of calories anywhere between 80-100 calories.
So these are the calories in a cup of coffee with milk, anywhere between 80-100.
But what about the calories in a cup of coffee with sugar and milk? How many calories are there in a cup of coffee with sugar and milk?
Well, let’s say you use 200ml of semi-skimmed milk and 1/2 tsp of sugar, that would bring the total calories between 90-100.
It’s worth pointing out that the calories in coffee with milk no sugar will very much depend on what type of milk you use and how many shots of coffee you use as well. if you use full-fat milk, then we are looking at nearly 200 calories per cup of coffee.
Is Coffee With Milk High In Calories?
The answer would depend on what type of milk you use, and how much! If you use low-fat milk with 1-2 shots of coffee in your coffee, then we are looking at around 100 calories. Not that much, but the more you drink, the more they will add up, so be mindful.
Calories In Coffee With Milk And 2 Sugars
