Is Yogurt Smoothie Good For Weight Loss?

A yogurt smoothie is good for weight loss. Unsweetened yogurt provides your body with quality protein and minerals such as calcium, and it’s typically relatively low in calories, but very filling.

Furthermore, plain Greek yogurt also contains probiotics, which are super beneficial to our gut health.

Yogurt smoothies can help you lose weight only if you use plain yogurt though, not a flavored with added sugars.

Flavored yogurt unfortunately contains quite a lot of added sugar and other processed ingredients to make it tasty and to add color to them.

So avoid these types of yogurts if you are trying to lose weight.

What Are The Benefits of Greek Yogurt Smoothie?

The benefits of a Greek yogurt smoothie are many, but they also vary based on the other ingredients you use with the yogurt.

However, here is a list of the typical benefits you can expect from drinking a Greek yogurt smoothie:

  • Weight Loss: Yogurt is high in protein and fruit typically used in yogurt smoothies is high in fiber. Both of these elements help satiety and a feeling of fullness. Not being as hungry will allow you to cut down on calories, which can lead to a calorie deficit.
  • Nutrient Dense: Yogurt smoothies can be a source of various essential nutrients including calcium, protein, vitamin B12, and phosphorus, all of which contribute to overall health.
  • Digestive Health: Greek yogurt contains probiotics which can promote a healthy gut. The presence of fiber from the fruit typically used in yogurt smoothies further enhances the gut-health benefits.
  • Sustained Energy: The combination of ingredients in the smoothie provides a balanced mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that can offer sustained energy throughout the day.
  • Bone Health: Dairy offers calcium and vitamin D, which are essential for bone health.
  • Protein Boost: Greek yogurt and the milk liquid smoothie base provide a good amount of protein, which helps in muscle repair and growth.

Optional Recipe Variations

When you make any meal or snack, you customize it to suit your own preferences and tastes.

So, below you will find some of my suggestions for optional variations of this weight loss yogurt smoothie.

  • If you don’t have peanut butter powder at home, you can use regular protein powder.
  • For a smoothie with Greek yogurt and frozen fruit, use frozen fruit of your choice. I personally used fresh blueberries, but using frozen fruit can help thicken the smoothie even more!
  • If you don’t mind bananas, you can make a banana yogurt smoothie for weight loss, by adding 1/2 banana to your blender along with the other ingredients listed. This will make the smoothie sweeter and also thicker too.
  • If you like rich smoothies, add a tablespoon of nut butter to your smoothie. Just note that this will impact the calories per serving. However, it will make the smoothie much more filling and tasty.
