Ice Cream Smoothie Recipe Variations

I love developing smoothies, but I do particularly like to develop sweet smoothies.

I have previously developed Biscoff smoothies, Nutella smoothies, and more!

The best thing about developing your own recipes from scratch like I do, is that you get to test numerous different versions.

If you are interested in adjusting the recipe slightly to suit your preferences, below are some variations I have personally tested that you may like:

  • Make the smoothie with more ice cream. I found that using 1 scoop made it less sugary, but you can use 2 scoops instead if you have a sweet tooth!
  • Don’t like bananas? Use frozen mango instead. The tropical flavor from the mango complements the mild flavor of decadent vanilla so well.
  • Use different ice cream flavors. The ice cream doesn’t have to be vanilla, you can use strawberry, tropical, and even chocolate! I even tested using sorbets, and they worked well too.

Make a Smoothie Bowl

As you can see based on the pictures of the strawberry banana smoothie with ice cream, it is quite thick and creamy.

The consistency is ideal for a smoothie bowl.

I added the following toppings which complemented the smoothie:

  •  Sweet crunchy granola.
  • Drizzle of honey.
  • Slices fresh strawberries.
  • Sliced ripe banana.

Make It Vegan

a spoonful of thick smoothie

One of my best friends is vegan, and at the time I was developing this smoothie recipe with ice cream, she happened to be around.

I didn’t want her to be left out, so I created a vegan-friendly version of this recipe, and she loved it!

To make this smoothie vegan, do the following:

  • Use vegan ice cream. There are so many options these days.
  • Instead of dairy milk, use almond milk. I used vanilla almond milk.

My favorite vegan ice cream and the one I used in the recipe is Oatly

Recipe Tips

You must use frozen fruit in the recipe, otherwise, you will not achieve the thickness and creaminess.

However, if you only have fresh fruit, only use 1/2 cup of fresh strawberries, and 2 ripe bananas. and 2-3 scoops of ice cream.

This should create a pretty thick and enjoyable consistency.

Questions From The Smoothie Community

Are Smoothies Supposed To Have Ice Cream?

Smoothies do not generally have ice cream. Smoothies are considered a healthy beverage, this is why you won’t often find smoothies made with ice cream. But, most smoothie chains or fast food chains that offer smoothies, will typically add heavy cream or ice cream to their smoothies. If you are looking for a sweet beverage with fruit in it, definitely try a smoothie with ice cream!

Is This Strawberry Banana Smoothie Recipe With Ice Cream Healthy?

This vanilla ice cream fruit smoothie is not unhealthy, but it’s not on the healthy side either. It’s good for you in some ways, since it contains 2 types of real fruit. It only has 1 small scoop of vanilla ice cream, so technically it’s not too bad. Enjoy it, and don’t think about whether it’s healthy or not!

Can I Use Frozen Yogurt Instead Of Ice Cream?

I have not personally tested using frozen yogurt, but I have tested using a sorbet, which less a weaker texture than frozen yogurt and it worked fine. So I don't see how frozen yogurt wouldn't work.
