How To Prepare Dragon Fruit For Smoothies

step by step how to prepare dragon fruit

If you have never prepared dragon fruit before, it may be a bit intimidating, and you may not know where to start.

Don’t worry, I had the same issue when I bought a dragon fruit for the first time!

Here’s how to prepare dragon fruit:

  • Step 1: Place a chopping board on a flat surface and grab a sharp knife.
  • Step 2: Place the whole dragon fruit in the middle of the chopping board, and slice it diagonally (See image above for reference).
  • Step 3: Grab a large spoon, and press it on the edge of the skin and pulp. The spoon has to be inserted. Continue to press it against the skin, as you go around in a circle scooping the flesh out. It’s the same method as preparing an avocado.
  • Step 4: Once you scoop it out, dice it up and it’s ready to use!

Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl Making Tips:

a spoonful of Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl

Some tricks could help you make the perfect smoothie bowl, even if you have never made one before!

Here are my top tips:

  1. Use Frozen Fruit: The recipe calls for frozen pineapple and raspberries. If you use fresh fruit, the smoothie bowl won’t work.
  2. Softer Ingredients Go Closer To The Blades: If you are using a regular blender, add the soft ingredients first, followed by the frozen ingredients. If using a Nutribullet, add the soft ingredients in the end, since the blades are added manually.
  3. Don’t Add Too Much Liquid To Start: Add 1-2 tablespoons of liquid to begin with, and gradually add more as you blend and you think it’s necessary.
  4. Work Fast: Since you are working with frozen fruit, they will begin to thaw as soon as you take them out of the freezer.
  5. Eat Fast: And finally, as soon as the smoothie is blended, dollop it onto your favorite bowl, add your toppings, and eat it immediately!

Equipment:

Blender Type Suitability:
Nutribullet
Vitamix Blender
BlendJet X
Ninja Blender
Oster Blender X
Hamilton Blender
AMZChef Blender X
Wamife Blender X
Ninja Food Processor
Kitchen Aid Food Chopper X
Hamilton Beach Food Processor

A Nutribullet 600 is what I have been using the most recently when it comes to making smoothie bowls.

But, you cannot beat a Vitamix or a powerful food processor, such as a Ninja.

Optional Smoothie Variations

If you have a dietary restriction or simply want to try something different, below are some ideas:

  1. Vegan Smoothie: Swap the dairy yogurt in the recipe for a vegan alternative. I love using coconut yogurt!
  2. Swap The Berry: I used frozen raspberries because they complement the sweet dragon fruit very well. However, you can use any berry you like or have available. Just make sure it’s frozen.
  3. Nutty Goodness: Add a tablespoon of cashew or almond butter for a gentle nutty flavor that complements the dragon fruit.
  4. Green Goodness: Incorporate a handful of spinach or kale for a nutritious boost without impacting the taste of this smoothie bowl.

Yes, adding a scoop of your favorite protein powder is a great way to increase the protein content, making the smoothie bowl more filling. Just be aware that adding powder may require adjusting the amount of dairy-free milk to achieve your desired consistency.
