Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tsp melted coconut oil
  • 1 cup/150g frozen banana slices
  • 1 tbsp almond butter (or peanut butter)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/3 cup/65g yogurt (use dairy-free if needed)
  • 1 cup/250ml milk (use dairy-free if needed)

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend everything until completely smooth. It should take 2-3 minutes, depending on the power of your blender or a Nutribullet.
  3. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

The smoothie is best consumed as soon as it’s blended, but you can also take the smoothie on the go.

How Much Coconut Oil Should I Put In My Smoothie?

The amount of coconut oil to add to your smoothie will vary, depending on the size of the smoothie, and how many ingredients you have.

Typically though, a tablespoon of coconut oil should be plenty to add to your smoothies.

How to Add Coconut Oil to Smoothies Without Clumping

When I first started adding coconut oil to smoothies, I had the common issue of clumping my smoothies.

After testing different ways to avoid this happening with my smoothies whenever I add coconut oil, I did this one thing that worked!

  • Melt the coconut oil, ensuring it’s warm but not hot, then add it last to your blender.
  • Blend immediately after adding the oil to your blender.

Recipe Variations Of This Coconut Oil Smoothie

Upon developing this coconut oil smoothie, I tested different variations of the smoothie.

So if you want to make a different variation of the recipe, and try out different ingredients, below you will find some of my tested variations which are still very tasty:

  • Don’t like coconut oil? Make an olive oil smoothie by swapping the coconut oil for olive oil.
  • Substitute the banana in the original recipe for 1/2 cup of frozen berries of choice.
  • Fancy a tropical twist? Swap the bananas for 1/2 cup of frozen mango or pineapple slices.
  • If you don’t have chia seeds, you can use oats instead. 
  • For a higher protein smoothie without adding protein powder, add 1/3 cup of cottage cheese. If you don’t mind powders, use collagen powder.
