How Long Do Smoothies Last In The Fridge

Today I am sharing an experiment I conducted recently to find out exactly how long smoothies last in the fridge!

I tested 4 different smoothies, stored slightly differently in the fridge.

Watch the video below or read the written report after the video!

Key Experiment Takeaways

There is no right answer as to how long a homemade smoothie lasts in the fridge.

It very much depends on the type of smoothie, how it’s stored, and its ingredients.

As a general rule though, after 24 hours, the taste and visual appearance of the smoothie will be changed.

Taste, sniff it, and if you don’t think it’s off, drink it!

Results From The Experiment: Smoothies Stored In Glass Cups (Uncovered):

  • Dairy-Based Smoothies: Dairy-based smoothies with no frozen fruit taste good after 24 hours and are totally safe. The smoothie even tasted good on the 48th hour mark too.
  • Smoothies Made With Frozen Fruit (No Dairy): Frozen fruit smoothies generally don’t taste or look appetizing after 24 hours in the fridge. The frozen fruit defrosts and changes the texture of the smoothie. If the smoothie is quite watery, you can clearly see the water being separated and sinking at the bottom.

Results From The Experiment: Smoothies Stored In Containers (Covered):

  • Dairy-Based Smoothies With Frozen Fruit: After 24 hours, the beautiful blue color from the blueberries darkened. The smoothie tasted ok after 24 hours, but the texture was not very appetizing. After 48 hours, I didn’t enjoy the taste or texture. For this smoothie, 24 hours is the max for taste purposes.
  • Non-Dairy Smoothies Made With Frozen Fruit: This was a green smoothie that contained lime as the main ingredient. It tasted good after 24 and 48 hours.

How Do You Know If A Smoothie Has Gone Bad?

Do smoothies go bad in the fridge? Yes, they certainly do if kept there for too long.

If a smoothie has gone bad, it will either have its appearance looking strange or smell bad.

But, the taste is the most important factor. If a smoothie tastes bad, just discard it immediately.

Experiment Summary

How long homemade smoothies last in the fridge very much depends on the type of smoothie.

However, generally, smoothies without frozen fruit tend to taste better and retain a better texture.

I have been making and storing smoothies for a long time. My general rule is that if the smoothie has been in the fridge for more than 24 hours, it gets discarded.
